210. Seoraksan National Park, South Korea

SUBMITTED BY: http://our1world.tumblr.com/

Seoraksan National Park on the East coast of the Korean peninsula, only 2 1/2 hours away from Seoul by express bus, is a truly stunning area.  If you manage to visit in the fall when the leaves are changing, it can be magical.  Here, there are trails winding up through the mountains to staggering heights with panoramic views of the surrounding area, hidden buddhist temples in crevices of sheer cliff walls, as well as a giant copper buddha statue.

I visited Seoraksan with my boyfriend this past November, and it was one of the greatest weekends I’ve ever had.  Most people (us included) choose to spend one day hiking up to the top of the main mountain, stay in the shelter at the top, and hike down the next day. One can also take a cable ride up one of the adjacent mountains.  Along the way up, there are several small shops offering traditional Korean dishes, and (delicious) homemade wine for when you want to take a break.

The park is only about 1/2 hour away from the city of Sokcho where there are beautiful beaches, and plenty of cheap, delicious Korean food waiting.

96. Palgongson, South Korea

I used to teach English in South Korea and I’ve got to admit I was miserable (this was not Korea’s fault) but just about every other weekend I would make the trip to Palgongson, a park south of Taegu.  Palgongson was such a peaceful escape from the urban jungles of South Korea.  A mountainous landscape with flowering cherry blossoms in the spring and the changing leaves in autumn.  Wander the paths through the landscape, climb the mountain, take in the traditional architecture, visit Donghwasa temple filled with stunning carvings and architecture, if you’re lucky, as I was many times, you can spend the afternoon with one of the monks, drinking tea, talking about life and falling in love with the world again.

2. Seoul, South Korea

Seoul may seem like an unlikely ‘romantic destination’ but there is so much life and energy in this city.  I remember one night in particular when my (then) boyfriend and I had had a bit too much soju to drink and we were running down the streets of Seoul so fast that the lights were a blur and the music from the nori-bhangs was wafting through the air and we stopped and danced slow and close in the busy streets of Seoul and it was lovely, urban romance.
