Seoraksan National Park on the East coast of the Korean peninsula, only 2 1/2 hours away from Seoul by express bus, is a truly stunning area. If you manage to visit in the fall when the leaves are changing, it can be magical. Here, there are trails winding up through the mountains to staggering heights with panoramic views of the surrounding area, hidden buddhist temples in crevices of sheer cliff walls, as well as a giant copper buddha statue.
I visited Seoraksan with my boyfriend this past November, and it was one of the greatest weekends I’ve ever had. Most people (us included) choose to spend one day hiking up to the top of the main mountain, stay in the shelter at the top, and hike down the next day. One can also take a cable ride up one of the adjacent mountains. Along the way up, there are several small shops offering traditional Korean dishes, and (delicious) homemade wine for when you want to take a break.
The park is only about 1/2 hour away from the city of Sokcho where there are beautiful beaches, and plenty of cheap, delicious Korean food waiting.
