Set amongst rolling hills, a picturesque lake and a mountainous backdrop the town of Wanaka is about as breath taking as they come. I was here a long time ago (over ten years ago) so I don’t know how much it might have changed but when I visited it was lovely and quiet and laid back - especially in comparison to it’s neighboring city Queenstown. This is a place of beautiful hiking, breath-taking views and water sports coupled with delicious restaurants and cafes. It’s easy to fall in love here - an idyllic little spot.
Think skiing, snowboarding, bungee jumping, hiking, mountain biking… not so romantic. But then imagine the base of all these ‘extreme’ activities being a quaint little town sitting on picturesque Lake Wakatipu with a range of snow-capped mountains as the backdrop - a little more romantic? Great cafes and restaurants and breathtaking views make this spot amazing to have fun and fall in love. I felt like every direction I looked in in Queenstown was more beautiful than the last. Spend the day getting your adrenaline pumping or tramping through the fabulous wilderness and spend the night sipping wine next to a roaring fire. This is a really special place.
There are so many great spots in New Zealand. There are mountains and oceans, lakes and streams, volcanoes and hot springs, fjords and cloud forests… But one of the most romantic activities I came across in New Zealand was touring the wine region of Marlborough. Picturesque vineyards, delicious restaurants, beautiful wines… what a great trip to take with your partner. sigh…
Taupo, a picturesque town located on Lake Taupo with the breathtaking backdrop of volcanic peaks. There is so much to do here - sailing, swimming and relaxing by the lake are some of the obvious activities. Nearby you can visit the beginning of the Wairekei river or travel to the natural thermal pools and transport yourself to another world. It’s nearly impossible not to get swept away with romance in a setting such as this.

One of the most peaceful places I’ve ever been - we return every year because of the amazing atmosphere at St. Bathans. The town is an historic gold mining town with roughly 60 residents. There is a blue lake, just down from the tavern that is breathtaking. This lake has a strange bright blue color due to some unusual mix of minerals. This is the kind of place where time slows down and a great destination for romance.
In typical New Zealand fashion, Coromandel is an exquisite combination of different landscapes in a small area. Quaint countryside meets, ocean. Karst topography, caves and beaches will blow you away with their beauty. Wander through the surrounding town, play a game of rugby on the beach, have a picnic, watch the sunset. This place is so unusual and so beautiful - a perfect landscape to explore with a loved one.
Black sand beaches, snow capped mountains, sea lions and whales…. Kaikoura is an incredible place. Located in the South Island of New Zealand this little town is an awesome romantic spot. Little restaurants with delicious seafood, an insanely beautiful coastal walk… losing days here is a little too easy. You can also hop around on the rocks by the sea lions or take a whale watching tour (which was surprisingly cool).
Touted as one of the most beautiful treks in the world I was surprised to find the claims to be true. You get boated into this trek - it’s extremely popular - yet I went at the very end of the season and was only boated in with 6 other people so avoiding the crowds is doable.
If you’re the sort that finds romance through physical activity and being outdoors you should really check this out. This trek will blow your mind… from the stunning fjords to the wetlands to the waterfalls all the way up to the alpine vistas - this 4 day walk has it all. It’s so diverse in its landscapes and picturesque in its scenery that there is always something beautiful to look at or a perfect spot to sit and make a cup of tea. Nature lovers should make the trip here, this place does not disappoint.
My first real solo overseas trip was a ‘working holiday’ in New Zealand. I was young and unsure what to do with myself and it took me a few weeks to figure out that I didn’t need to stick with the group of people I’d come with - I could strike off on my own. So I made a sign that said, “west coast please” and stood by the side of the road until I was picked up. My first destination was Nelson, NZ. A really quaint town with the breathtaking ‘nelson lakes’. It was there I met an adorable boy who was driving his motorcycle across the country. My first holiday fling… sigh.
