Do you ever dream of going somewhere where you’re totally cut off from society? Somewhere where there is literally nothing except beach, ocean, hut and some places to eat? Well here’s your spot on the Pacific Coast Zipolite feels completely cut off from the world. There is literally nothing to do here besides walk on the beach, play in the ocean, eat, drink and watch the sun set… It’s not a high end beach destination but a sweet ‘off-the-beaten-track’ type spot perfect for a day or two of doing nothing with your loved one.

This is a gorgeous little city on the Pacific coast. Sip tequila on the beach, admire the rock cliffs all around you, take a sunset sail, or just wander the winding streets downtown draped with little white lights. The people are friendly, the food is excellent (restaurants range from simple to gourmet), and although the town is easy for an English-speaker to visit, it’s not overrun by American tourists. It’s a perfect spot in a beautiful country.
Oaxaca is a beautiful colonial town in Southern Mexico… not preserved in a Disney-land fashion like many colonial towns but a bit grittier, which was something I really loved about it. This is a place of cobblestone streets and beautifully decrepit colonial architecture. A place of vibrant colors, lively markets and mariachi musicians. The region itself is known for chocolate and the town proper does not disappoint. Dappled with lovely street side restaurants and market stands filled with Oaxacan hot chocolate and cheese and savory mole… the food here is fantastic. Wander the streets, explore the market, sit in the town square and sip on some tequilla - a lovely romantic afternoon!
Puerto Escondido, translated as the “Hidden Port”, is a great, unassuming, backpacker/surfer destination in western Mexico. Not an untouched paradise, this coastal area is chalked full of fun, romantic things to do. Of course there’s always laying on the beach, swimming, watching the sun set… If you and your sweetie are surfers this place has amazing waves. If you are not - rent some motorbikes and explore the town, west of the beaches is a beautiful, peaceful lagoon full of interesting birds. Go deep sea fishing or just relax in one of the beach-side restaurants with some ice cold beer and delicious Mexican fare.

Tulum is a beautiful beach an hour or so away from Cancun. It has beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear blue water - a series of fantastic cenotes ideal for snorkeling/scuba. Soak in the beautiful scenery, indulge in some tequila and delicious tropical fruits… Among the rocks you can jump off of into the ocean and there are ancient Mayan ruins to explore as well. A great romantic travel destination.
Gorgeous town. This is a place of cobblestone streets, grandiose architecture and stone. There is a ‘dark’ vibe to this place for some reason Mordor from ‘Lord of the Rings’ popped into my head as I entered this gray stone-filled place. But at night when the stars come up and these gorgeous structures are lit by warm lighting, Morelia turns into a wonderful romantic destination. Stroll along the streets and look at the buildings - even cooler at night. Sit in the public square and listen to the musicians, eat delicious Mexican food, have some tequila for me!
Most people visit Mexico to go to the beach which don’t get me wrong is a pretty good reason to go - but if you have the gumption head off on your own into the highland forests of Michoacán your journey will be greatly rewarded with what I think is one of the most romantic places on Earth - the Monarch Butterfly Reserve.
Me, I parked my car at the foot of the hill (small mountain), paid my 5$ entrance fee and hiked up the wooded path and into a mass of swirling butterflies. They fill the sky with brilliant orange and make you feel like you’re in a fairy tale. It’s one of the most magical things I’ve seen in my life. It’s impossible to not feel swept away in this place.
In this city of colonial architecture, cobblestone streets and twisting alleys, lies the Callejón del Beso (Alley of the Kiss) - a romantic pilgrimage of sorts. Today the alley is innundated by kids telling the legend of this place and locals selling arts and crafts, despite the tourism that has cropped up here Guanajuato is an insanely charming place - as is its tale:
In this legend the daughter of a wealthy Spanish aristocrat (Doña Carmen) and her destitute suitor (Don Luis). Were brutally murdered by her father when he discovered them kissing across the narrow alley (below), where each occupied a balcony. Today it is said that couples must stand beneath the balcony and kiss to fend off bad luck.
