231. Heaven Lake (天池), China

Heaven Lake is a crater lake in China on the border of China and North Korea.  This lake nestled amongst a stunning mountain range is visually fabulous and makes for a great romantic, active getaway.  Grab your sweetie and hike the trails or go on horseback.  There is overnight accommodation in canvas yurts (there were also high-end hotels in the area).  It is rumored that this lake is home to the Lake Tianchi Monster which apparently takes the form of a buffalo with fins that lives in the lake so… watch out!

230. Halifax, Canada

Halifax is a gorgeous city on the Atlantic cost of Canada, in one of the country’s most beautiful provinces. The city abounds in culture, heritage, and good food. Even if you’re not a fan of seafood, you’ll find something to love! Halifax is a city of laidback people, cosy pubs, and historical and quaint architecture, while at the same time being a modern destination for outdoorsy tourists. Grab Cow’s brand ice cream while walking along the harbour boardwalk, or stroll hand-in-hand through the gardens, or dine aboard a floating restaurant - there’s a lot for lovers to do! Exploring the star-shaped Citadel is an absolute must, as is visiting the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and Pier 21 (Canada’s Ellis Island). Closeby to Halifax are many other delightful places, including the famous lighthouse at Peggy’s cove, and the seaside town of Lunenburg, where the Bluenose schooner was built. Halifax is a charming city within a charming country, and a great introduction to the wonders of the Maritimes!

214. Lofoten Norway

How does a remote destination sound for romance?  Lofoten (a chain of islands in northern Norway) feels like you fell off the map.  This is a magical place of stunning topography, quaint fishing villages, fjords, coastal views and fabulous seafood.  This is a great place for hiking, kayaking, photography… as well as leisurely strolls and great arctic char.  Lose yourself in this stunning place where life seems to move slower…  they don’t come much more romantic.

211. Marrakesh, Morocco

You can always find romance in candle lit dinners and sunsets and beaches but for me there is nothing more romantic then exploring an exotic destination with someone I love.  Marrakesh is a fascinating place that’s perfect for exploring… winding alleyways, street markets filling the air with spices and grilled meat and peppermint tea - in these ancient streets you can see acrobats, musicians and dancers.  This place is filled with a palpable energy and a feeling of mysticism unrivaled anywhere else.

*Antigua Guatemala

This place is magical, more that you can possibly imagine.  A gorgeous old colonial towns set amongst smoking volcanoes.  Cobblestone roads, horse drawn carriages, stunning architecture… this town has it all.  I wanted to hate Antigua because it’s so touristy, and it is, but I’ve got to say somehow this town rises above it unlike virtually all other tourist traps and remains utterly charming.  Stroll the quaint streets, eat some delicious food, have a Cuba Libre, watch the sunset and get swept away by this place.  I know I did.

210. Seoraksan National Park, South Korea

Seoraksan National Park on the East coast of the Korean peninsula, only 2 1/2 hours away from Seoul by express bus, is a truly stunning area.  If you manage to visit in the fall when the leaves are changing, it can be magical.  Here, there are trails winding up through the mountains to staggering heights with panoramic views of the surrounding area, hidden buddhist temples in crevices of sheer cliff walls, as well as a giant copper buddha statue.

I visited Seoraksan with my boyfriend this past November, and it was one of the greatest weekends I’ve ever had.  Most people (us included) choose to spend one day hiking up to the top of the main mountain, stay in the shelter at the top, and hike down the next day. One can also take a cable ride up one of the adjacent mountains.  Along the way up, there are several small shops offering traditional Korean dishes, and (delicious) homemade wine for when you want to take a break.

The park is only about 1/2 hour away from the city of Sokcho where there are beautiful beaches, and plenty of cheap, delicious Korean food waiting.

208. Udaipur, India

SUBMITTED BY: http://nicandrob.wordpress.com

Udaipur is a lake-side city in Rajasthan, India. In a three week touristy trip to India, Udaipur was easily the most beautiful and romantic place that I stayed, and I wished I could have stayed longer than the three days I had planned.

The city feels somehow feels small and magnificently grand at the same time. In one day you can explore tiny alleyway shops selling hand-bound notebooks, relax with hot tea and cakes in a European style cafe overlooking the lake. You can get lost in the centuries old havelis and palaces with their hidden waterfront gardens, ornate balconies and secret alcoves for secret meetings. By far the best views though are from the lake itself, getting closer to the Lake Palace (of Octopussy fame) Jagmandir Island and the distant Monsoon Palace.

204. Quito Ecuador

SUBMITTED BY: http://napkin.johnriley.me/

I took a trip all over Ecuador. Ecuador is the number one most biologically diverse country in the world. It is one of the only countries to be at the equator, but have all of the different climate zones. You can see everything from the beach, to rainforest, to snow capped mountains. It is a truly magical place.

Quito is the capital of Ecuador set amongst a beautiful mountain landscape.  The old town is a UNESCO heritage site which typically makes places feel like disneyland, but not here.  The charm in this old city is that people still live, work and play there. There’s a subdued charm to quito and a lovely romance in roaming its streets and exploring all it has to offer.

Whistler, Canada

*Whistler Canada is a mountain that some people call Blackcomb because it’s neighboring mountain. Its a ski resort but there is also a little town that has many different restaurants and shops as well as nearby hiking. Its really romantic cause there is soooo much snow and its always nice to go out on the deck with your loved one with a blanket and sit there with each other snuggling and such.

203. Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

SUBMITTED BY: http://napkin.johnriley.me/

As part of our trip around Ecuador we headed to the Galapagos Islands. The Galapagos Islands are where Charles Darwin conceived of the Theory of Evolution. They are magical. There are more species of plants and animals on these Islands, 600 miles away from Ecuador, than you can count. If you and your significant other are into wildlife and exploration this is the spot for you.
