128. Granada, Spain

Granada is a city and the capital of the south eastern province of Granada in Andalusia, Spain.  Located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains and at the convergence of 3 rivers, the natural scenery is hard to rival and the ancient city’s history is as impressive as any you’ll find.  Wandering through the hauntingly beautiful grounds of The Alhambra (the last Moorish stronghold in Spain to be taken by Ferdinand and Isabella) is one of the most romantic experiences I had during my 6 months in Spain.  The city itself is made to be lost in and the various neighborhoods offer wonderful ways to spend an afternoon.  The Realejo, or former Jewish quarter, is full of Los Carmenes (Andalusian villas with gardens opening into the street), Bib-Rambla features the Arab bazaar and many delicious restaurants, Sacromonte is characterized by cave houses and is the center of flamenco song and dance, while Albayzín is the old Moorish quarter of the city and contains the site of the ancient artistic city of Elvira.  The nearby University of Granada infuses the city with a vibrant night-life and, since Granada is also one of the last remaining Spanish cities to carry on the tradition of offering free tapas to customers in bars and restaurants, it is the perfect Spanish city for a low-cost night out with your loved one.

102. Granada, Nicaragua

How does a beautiful Spanish colonial town sound?  What if it’s plopped in the middle of the tropics?  My memories of Granada are that of cobblestone streets and beautifully decrepit architecture.  A place of lush courtyards with fountains trickling in the background.  A town of street performers, beer and criminally delicious comidors. How can you not get lovey-dovey here!  how is that possible?  Fork out a little extra for air-con and you’re golden.
