179. Shanghai, China

SUBMITTED BY: http://melissaroxursox.tumblr.com/

Shanghai might not be an obvious choice for a romantic spot as it is a big modern city but it has it’s hidden charms and nooks and crannies exotic food and a busy harbor.  I went to Shanghai last week and there was an amazing street that had trees that had christmas lights on them with little light up flowers hanging from them and when you walked by them at night it was really romantic.

170. Kathmandu, Nepal

We all know romance can be a fancy dinner and bottle of wine or walk on the beach and a sunset - but for me, there is nothing more romantic than exploring an exotic location with a loved one. Nepal captured me from the moment I stepped off the plane.  The energy here is palpable, the smells of incense and dahl bat - the sounds of traffic and foreign languages being spoken - the visual feast for the eyes in the winding alleys and the stunning temples… Nepal is so magical you don’t even need to be with someone to be swept off your feet.  That said, wandering through the winding markets, discovering back-alley restaurants that blow your socks off and enjoying the energetic nightlife with food and drinks is a great romantic outing.

51. Trekking in Nepal

Okay, this isn’t romance in your get-dressed-up-have-fancy-dinner-and-wine way, but for those who get inspired by exploring, by being outdoors, by taking in the most fantastic views in the world then this is your destination.

It’s hard work, trekking in Nepal… the only one I’ve done is the Annapurna circuit, 19 days of trekking.  It’s physically challenging but I’ve never seen such beauty in all my life, from the people, to the villages, to the mountain ranges and the flowing streams.  Prayer flags blowing in the winds, yaks and horses and donkeys and vultures… This is the stuff adventure dreams are made of.  Stop along the way for some Dal Bhat and Chai, what a great way to experience the world with your loved one, on foot, slowly…  this place is magical.

41. Bangkok, Thailand

There are probably many who have been to Bangkok who think I’m nuts for suggesting this as a romantic destination, but I’ve got to be honest, I’m totally in love with this city.  If I could leave my town and relocate anywhere in the world it would be here.  Bangkok never ceases to amaze me it is a perfect combination of big, modern city mixed with traditional wats and ancient alleyways.  The energy of this place is so intense you can’t help but feel in awe of it.  As far as romance…  grab a motorbike taxi to the weekend market, wander the ancient temples and canals, get a massage, eat the most delicious cuisine on the planet (in my humble opinion:).  Have you tried mangosteen fruit (below)?!  We don’t get it where I’m from, food of the gods - end the night with a bucket and let yourself go :)

35. Dieng Plateu, Central Java, Indonesia

(SUBMITTED BY: FEBRYFAWZI)

Dieng Plateau, is a marshy plateau at the foot of an active volcano in Central Java, Indonesia.

The name “Dieng” comes from the word Di Hyang which means “Abode of the Gods”.  Dieng Plateau is located almost 2000 m above sea level.  This romantic spot is shrouded in mist.  Poisonous effusions and sulfur-colored lakes make it an important spot for religious tribute. It is covered with temples and small shrines dedicated to Shiva.

Romance, peace, and beauty are words that represent this place. There is also a nice Lake in the area: Telaga Warna (turquoise in color from the sulfur) and many caves in the area, oftentimes occupied by people meditating. These people meditate up to months without eating or drinking.  Don’t get scared and don’t disturb them.

34. Bagan, Burma (Myanmar)

Not a typical destination, the ancient city of Bagan is like nothing I’ve seen before… ancient ruins of temples for as far as the eye can see.  Dirt roads with horse carts weave through the massive temple complex.  What’s so wonderful about this place is the ‘undiscovered’ feel of it.  It’s not ‘undiscovered’ but still, as a tourist, you’re free to roam the grounds wherever you like.  Free to climb in and upon most of the temples and play and explore and as the sun sets, grab a horse cart to take you home.  This place will blow you away, I promise.

32. Taman Negara, Malaysia

Said to be the oldest jungle in the world, Taman Negara is a magical place.  Whether or not the age of this place is true, it certainly feels like it.  The trees are so big and old that you almost expect them to start talking to you - lord of the rings style.  This place typifies ‘jungle’.  If you find romance in a lazy ride down a slow moving river,  a walk among a jungle canopy, in wildlife teeming with tropical birds and unusual insects (not to mention rarely seen tigers, rhinos, elephants…) then this place would be perfect for you.   An added bonus is that this spot is reached by train and boat… the two loveliest forms of transport.

27. Gili Trawangan, Indonesia

Gili Trawangan is one of many small islands off of Lombok Indonesia.  If you are looking for a romantic spot that is a bit remote this is a great candidate.  With spotty electricity and no motorized vehicles this island is full of bicycles and horse carts.  White sand beaches, crystal clear waters and views of neighboring mountains and islands makes this spot truly idyllic.  This is an island of reggae music, barbecued fish, magic mushrooms and tropical fruit.  An island to wander around, snorkel, and play on the beach… Lots of pubs and restaurants here, I even remember doing pub trivia one night.

20. Island of Bali: Ubud, Indonesia

What can one say about Bali that hasn’t already been said…  Everything smells good in this place - small streams of smoke from the tips of incense sticks crawl up every wall in this island.  Ubud, located inland Bali is wonderfully romantic.  Lush dense jungle, wildlife, and monkeys coupled with criminally beautiful rice terraces, traditional music and dancing are just some of the great things that can be found here.  Everywhere you turn in Ubud you will find a little offering to the gods, a mixture of banana leaves, flowers and incense (probably other things I’m not aware of).  This place feels so lush, so green - steeped in tradition and ritual - a great romantic destination.

13. Ton Sai, Thailand

Traveling overland from Malaysia to Bangkok I stopped along the way in Ton Sai.  What was supposed to be a short rest-stop turned into a two week stay.  Talk about romance - wow!  Turquoise blue waters, caves, jungle, sunsets… not to mention a hand-full of ocean side hut/restaurants serving delicious curries and cocktails.  Sight, smell, sound… Ton Sai has everything for the senses.  If wandering around the tropics, jumping in the ocean, and lazing on the beach is your idea of romance this place is ideal.  (as a side note, I learned to rock climb here… it’s a great climbing destination as well)
